• The 7th Annual Summer Hope Benefit - On Friday, September 11th, 2009 the Summer Hope Foundation hosted the 7th Annual Summer Hope Benefit at The Carltun at Eisenhower Park. It was Summer Hope’s most successful event ever – welcoming nearly 220 guests and raising almost $55,000 in support of the fight against cancer! From that $55,000, Summer Hope is able to donate $10,000 to the American Cancer Society, $2,500 to Cold Spring Harbor Labs, sponsor NYC Marathon bids for Fred’s Team at Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center to the tune of nearly $5,000, not to mention continuing our A Mother’s Gift Scholarship, sending out countless more Hope Packages and so much more! One of the most exciting moments of the evening came after board member, Carla Alvarez Woitovich, spoke about the Wii Funcenter that Summer Hope is donating to Schneider Children’s Hospital Hematology/Oncology Unit and a couple from the audience (who wish to remain anonymous) decided right then and there to sponsor the $4,200 cost of the Wii Funcenter. It was truly an amazing moment and the rest of the evening matched it every step of the way! Special thank to Caryn Rude, Jose Estevez and the entire staff of The Carltun for giving us an absolutely amazing night to remember! • Taking it to the Streets: The Summer Hope Foundation Founder, Eddie Mouradian, is running the NYC Marathon, in support of Fred’s Team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering in memory of Ed Cook – read about his exploits in training for the marathon at www.runfatboyrun-nycmarathon.blogspot.com. He is joined on his journey by Board Member, Jill Cook and friend of Summer Hope, Heather Bishop, both running for Fred’s Team in memory of Jill’s father and in honor of Heather’s aunt. Also running is Meghan Butler, for American Cancer Society’s DetermiNation in honor of her mother. Summer Hope will be supporting all of these runners in their training and their fundraising. To make a donation to any of them please visit either: https://fredsteam.mskcc.org/fundraising/Controller or http://main.acsevents.org/site/TR. • Support Heather's Marathon Run – Heather Bishop, a dear friend of Summer Hope’s, is running the NYC Marathon (along with founder, Eddie Mouradian) for Fred’s Team at Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center, In Memory of her Uncle Ed Cook, and In Honor of her aunt, Colleen Curran. On Saturday, September 26th, 2009 a Benefit Concert will be held on behalf of her marathon bid at Rollin’ Greens Bar (247-77 Jericho Tpke. Bellerose, NY 11426)! All the money raised by Summer Hope this evening will directly go to support Heather’s Marathon bid and to Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center. To download the flyer, click here! This event, put together nearly single handedly by board member (and avid gofler) Mike Alahverdian in just about six weeks, was a huge success as we hosted 60 golfers for a day of fun on the links! Congratulations to our winning foursome, the 2009 Hope Cup winners: Joe Javetski, Craig Tumbarello, Mark Gassner, Edgar Bettancourt (pictured above)! And congratulations to Mike for putting on such an awesome event. Thank you to Ryan and the staff of The Pine Ridge, I’d also like to thank our volunteers for that day: Fiona Tierney, Patty Kelly, Melissa Kiernan & Abbie Bogart. Plans are underway for our 2nd Annual Outing, so if you’d like to get on the mailing list for that event, please contact Mike at mike.summerhope@gmail.com.
